Boise Idaho’s Job Market

I have so many juicy things to tell you…

In January, the Idaho Department of Labor reported that Idaho’s unemployment rate increased by .1% which takes it from 2.7% to a whopping 2.8%!!! Its so wonderfully rediculous how low our unemployement rate is. Even better news: Micron, one of Idaho’s largest employers, is going to build a new plant in Boise!

The only thing that slightly concerned me about the economy of Idaho were the issues surrounding Micron, one of Idaho’s largest employers.

The information in the following chart was taken from the Idaho Commerce and Labor website:

 Idaho’s 10 Largest Employers:

Name of Firm Type of Business # of Employees
Albertson’s, Inc. Food Retailer Over 5,000
Bechtel BWXT Idaho Nuclear Engineering/ Environmental Research Over 5,000
Micron Technology, Inc. Memory Devices / Semiconductors Over 5,000
Boise School District Public Schooling 3,000 - 5,000
Hewlett-Packard Company Laser Printers 3,000 - 5,000
Idaho Dept. of Health and Welfare State Health & Welfare Administration 3,000 - 5,000
J.R. Simplot Company Food Processing, Fertilizer, Chem., Mfg. 3,000 - 5,000
Mountain Home Air Force Base U.S. Air Force Base 3,000 - 5,000
St. Lukes Regional Medical Center. / Mountain States Tumor Institute Hospital / Health Care Provider 3,000 - 5,000
Wal-Mart Department Store 3,000 - 5,000

Micron was flirting with the idea of going oversees and rumors of their local plant closing were circulating. But yesterday’s paper put those fears to a halt! The front page headline: “Micron to Build New Plant in Boise.” Hooray!

The timing or cost details haven’t been disclosed, but knowing that Boise is in their future plans is very comforting. It will be interesting to watch what will happen to prices for Boise Real Estate surrounding the new Micron plant.
